Reacting to a recent national survey, Houston car accident attorney Brad T. Wyly today urged Texas parents to talk to their teenage children about texting while driving as their time behind the wheel begins its annual summer increase.
"In addition to more teenage drivers being on the road, there's the added danger – and what some are calling a 'national epidemic' – of texting while driving," said Wyly, the owner of the Houston personal injury firm, Wyly Law Firm, P.C.
"Parents need to drive home the point to their teenage children that texting while driving and otherwise using cell phones or other electronic devices while behind the wheel is an extremely dangerous thing to do," Wyly said. "Teen drivers need to understand the very real hazards of distracted driving."
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said earlier this month that its annual survey of risky teen behavior showed that about 58 percent of high school seniors had texted or emailed while driving during the month prior to the poll. About 43 percent of high school juniors acknowledged they did the same thing.
The CDC said distracted driving, which includes using electronic devices as well as eating, drinking and other behaviors, is to blame for about 16 percent of teen motor vehicle deaths. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood called texting and cell phone use behind the wheel "a national epidemic."
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) says car wrecks are the leading cause of death for American teenagers, and summer is the deadliest time of year on the roads for drivers aged 16 to 20.
More than 5,000 teenagers are killed in passenger vehicle crashes each year, the NHTSA says. An average of 422 teens die in car wrecks each month during the summer as compared to an average of 363 teen deaths each month during the rest of the year.
"The teen driving years are ones in which habits are formed," Wyly said. "Parents need to help their teenage drivers develop safe driving habits."
"We've investigated too many car accidents in which the evidence leads back to the fact that a horrible injury or a death was caused by a teenage driver taking their eyes off of the road to look at a cell phone or do something else they have no business doing while driving."
