5 teenagers in a serious car accident Monday are all Lake Orion High School ... - WXYZ

Oakland Twp., Mich. (WXYZ) - Two teenagers involved in a serious car accident in Oakland Township have been in critical condition since late Monday afternoon.  The 16-year-old Lake Orion girl and a 15-year-old Lake Orion boy are at Royal Oak's Beaumont Hospital.

Three other teenagers riding in the car with them were transported to McLaren Oakland Hospital in Pontiac.  They are a 17-year-old and two 14-year-olds who are in stable condition.

According to the Oakland County Sheriff's Department, the 16-year-old driver of a blue Saturn Ion blew through a stop sign on Clarkston Road and hit a Dodge Nitro traveling northbound on Adams Road.  The Nitro hit the Saturn on the driver's side.  The Saturn landed about a half a football field away from where the two vehicles collided.   The accident happened at 4 p.m. on Monday.

The 51-year-old driver of the Nitro and her 1-year-old passenger were not injured.   The teenagers suffered the serious injuries.  The 16-year-old driver had to be air-lifted to Royal Oak Beaumont Hospital.  She had a car full of friends from Lake Orion High School with her at the time.  They are two 14-year-olds, a 17-year-old, and a 15-year-old.  All four were transported to the hospital for injuries.

School starts back up again on September 4, where the Lake Orion School District said that two of the students will be entering the 9th grade, one will be going into 10th grade, and two will be entering the 11th grade.

The district released the following statement Tuesday:

"We were devastated to learn of this tragic accident and are still awaiting updates as to the condition of our five Lake Orion students.  On behalf of everyone in the district, we wish them a very speedy recovery."  - -Marion Ginopolis, LOCS Superintendent.

The sheriff's department does not believe alcohol to be a factor in this crash.

New laws took effect for teen drivers in the state of Michigan on My 30,2011 that prohibit 16-year-old drivers from having more than one passenger in their vehicle under the age of 21, but leave exceptions for school sanctioned events.
